Last week saw International Women’s Day and today is Momma Bears Day. Celebrating women and mother’s has become quite an important thing for me in my life, more so since becoming a Mom, as I’m sure is the case in every woman’s life. I’m proud to be a woman and proud of being a Mum. So, let’s talk about those women who have brought strong female characters to our screens.
The feelings of isolation and claustrophobia are what captures me when I’m watching a good Sci-fi movie. The desperation and loneliness of solitude with only yourself to blame or question is better than any traditional science fiction with aliens or government secrets. But I am quite fond of a good old alien attack on the planet earth with one single person ready to take on an entire race and save us from being elimated. Science fiction has so many incredible elements and paths to discover and can take us in a million and one directions. For me, the science fiction that stands out has an unknown, sometime fearful, element. It questions right and wrong, and has an antihero with a few questionable traits. In saying that, here are my top 5 Sci-fi movies on Netflix at the moment with that claustrophobic element.
Babies mean night feed’s, which in turn means quite a lot of internet time. I don’t know what our mothers did at 3am but with severe tiredness I very much doubt she was smelling our heads in awe every single night on loop. Without Facebook and Instagram I’d probably have struggled through those night feeds which luckily have come to the end for us as Little Bean takes after me and has started to enjoy her sleep. But in my many, many sleepy midnight hazes, I discovered a world completely unknown to me. The world of subscription boxes! Why did no one tell me these were a thing? Here are five I love and think you’ll love too.
There has been a revolution in our house! First came the rebellion however. It was Momma Bear versus the toys and Momma Bear was losing fast. It was Christmas 2017. Santa had arrived with a sack plentiful of battery warranted toys and everything seemed to break at once. The cordless screwdriver had been misplaced and Momma’s usual “everything in its place” attitude had dispersed since Little Bean arrived. Her tool box aka the wicker basket was a cumbersome mess containing more yarn than tools. What was she to do?
Little Bean is an animal, a hungry animal. I started weaning her just before six months because, dear god, I couldn’t handle the stares and shouts at whatever was on my plate anymore. No matter what I was eating, she wanted. When Little Miss was a baby I was an un-adventurous, time poor Momma Bear whose commute meant there were very little home cooked dinners for her. It didn’t kill her! She ate and ate and happily moved on to our dinners when life settled down. Little Bean’ s appetite has outweighed her sisters from the very beginning. She’s an animal… did I say that already?
Since Netflix came along the way we view TV has changed so dramatically. No longer are we on tenderhooks waiting a week for the next episode of our favourite show. Trips to the video store, while nostalgic, are no longer done. And the phrase “there’s never anything on” can be left behind in the TV and Movie history books. Because with Netflix there is always something on. And thanks to Netflix there are some incredible original movies and TV shows brought to us directly through the provider. And when I say incredible I mean, surprisingly amazing and insanely worthwhile viewing. Here’s 5 Netflix Original Series you absolutely have to watch! Someone go get the popcorn…
Saturday was a magical day at Luggwoods. We were so lucky to be invited to the launch of their extremely special Christmas Event which opens on the 1st December. If you’re looking for a special Santa Experience that will leave lasting memories for both you and your children, then Santa’s Enchanted Forest at Luggwoods is not to be missed. It truly is one of the best, if not the best, Santa Experience in Dublin.
Books books books. You can’t have an English Degree with a twelve year career in librarianship and be writer and not love books. It’s one of the the things we have always instilled in Little Miss who has been reading books with Papa Bear since she was three months old. And so we have followed suit with Little Bean who has a fascination with grabbing at the book and is turning the pages with a little help from Momma Bear now that she is hitting six months old. But then there’s me who invested in a kindle years ago only for it to have been transformed into a white noise machine and now a paperweight. The scale of who owns the most books in our house now leans towards the kids but thats not a bad thing. But I’ve started to change that and with my blogger friends becoming accomplished novelists and writers in the past year I’m picking up more books than I ever did. So lately it’s been one for me and one for the kids.
Since having kids my ability to be comfortable with any sort of blood, guts or fear factor has diminished considerably when watching TV. In fact, I’ve pressed the pause button on The Walking Dead which I was obsessed with pre-babies and found my way back to the 1960s crazy world of advertising with Mad Men on Netflix. Aside from being addicted, like the rest of the world, to the incredible obscure and unusual, Stranger Things, I’m a wuss, and happy to admit it. This Halloween I will be skipping the classics and will let Freddy Kruger and Jason terrorize some other poor soul who can handle the terror. But, in saying that, I love a good psychological thriller that messes with your mind without the gore fest. So here are my top three Psychological Thrillers on Netflix that will chill your spine.
Myself and B have what you might call an eclectic taste. Our house is dotted with robots, books about Star Trek and pictures of comic books. We have a mannequin who we named Dorothy Zephyr for my love of steampunk and our industrial table lamp is a prized possession. Our taste in TV shows and movies varies from Sci fi to quirky humour to clever psychological thrillers. Since joining the Netflix StreamTeam I have been thinking of lists of movies and tv shows to introduce you to that myself and B have loved. Let’s start off with one of my favourite categories, Dystopian. Never heard of Dystopian before? Oh come on in and enter my favourite world!
