I have been designing and making my own jewellery out of old keys, watch parts and other bits and bobs since 2011. I actually started making jewellery at a time when B and I were arguing over whether to start a family. The big decision was a tedious and long thought out process for us both. At that time, I wanted to start a family and B was adament that he didn’t want kids, which was fair enough since we married very young and back then both of us were at a stage were we never envisaged having a family. But hearts and priorities change….
So, failing the sound of little footsteps, I started up my jewellery store on Etsy, and spent hours upon hours designing and creating unique items which, personally, I love 🙂
Essentially, it filled a void. It became my baby for quite a while. B is a gamer and I’m a crafter. Our hobbies mixed together well. We had a back room upstairs in our old house (remember the one we hated!) which technically should have been a bedroom but we turned it into a little sitting room with B’s PlayStation, our ridiculous collection of books and memorabilia, and my small green Ikea table filled to the brim with supplies.
We loved that room to be honest. It was like a getaway, a secret little place just for us, where B played, I made and we chatted and laughed. Often I would watch Netflix while making jewellery and would run through crappy series after crappy series because I’m a binge tv addict 🙂 Although, it’s still hilarious that B became more engrossed in Gossip Girl than I did and would watch over my shoulder, pausing his game when Chuck and Blair were in the middle of a spat!
My Etsy store, Timeless Avenue, is still important to me and as my sister has started her own craft store on Etsy, Simply Felt Ireland, we’ve started touring the markets, festivals and fairs together as traders this summer. It’s tedious and time consuming work, it makes zero money, but on top of blogging and writing, it’s a side of my identity I’ve managed to keep in this whirlwind romance called parenting.
My store went quiet from 2014 to the beginning of this year as I focused on little A and got to grips with being a Momma and balancing my time with family. Aside from the fact that there were sharp objects in my supplies, I simply lost the effort to make time for my hobby. Exhaustion, mild post natal depression and returning to work in my full time job as an information professional meant any semblance of hobby life went out the window. And B gamed less incase you thought it was just Momma Bear who was affected. Papa Bear also felt the struggle of new parenthood.
But a move to a new house in the countryside, the baby becoming a toddler who slept more, and a new lease of life meant B gamed more and I picked up the jewellery bug again.
The style of jewellery I make is called Steampunk. If you dont know the word you’ll probably recognise the genre at least. Think Jules Verne meets Queen Elizabeth II. It’s described as a subgenre of science fiction or science fantasy that incorporates technology and aesthetic designs inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery. For those who know me, you’ll know that I just love giving my creations away! I run competitions on my Timeless Avenue Facebook page (rookie mistake: I deleted my original 2011 Facebook page in 2014 when I thought I’d never go back to jewellery making again! Idiot!) and have given quite a lot of my pieces away, because I’m nice like that 🙂
I have fallen in love with blogging and appreciate the blogging community so much. I’ve gotten so much advice and help in the las few weeks since I started Over Heaven’s Hill, so really it’s only natural for me to run a competition on my blog!
To enter, simply check out my Etsy Store and COMMENT on this post with the NAME of your favourite piece of jewellery. I give each piece of jewellery a unique name which can be found in the description of your favourite item. Simples!
(Note: this may not be the piece you win as I have ongoing markets but there is plenty on the store and hopefully you like a good few pieces) The winner will be chosen at random and announced on the 1st of July! At which point, the winner can choose any piece of jewellery they like.
Good Luck and thanks for reading and entering 😀
THIS COMPETITION HAS NOW CLOSED – CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WINNER JANE SHAW
KEEP AN EYE OUT ON THE BLOG FOR FURTHER GIVEAWAYS IN THE FUTURE.
